The next day, Liam, Jane, and Claire are all up bright and early. It's Claire that wakes the pair up as she rushes into her Mom's bedroom, and jumps onto the bed. Liam rolls over just in time to avoid having any precious body parts squished, and Jane puts a protective hand over her belly. "Be careful Claire," she says, using her other hand to get Claire into a sitting down position. "Mama has something very important to tell you."
"What's dat Mama?" Claire asks, inquisitively, clutching her stuffed cat by its body.
Jane takes one of Claire's hands, and places it on her belly. "Remember how I told you that you grew in my tummy?"
Claire nods.
"Well now your brother or sister is growing in there." She smiles.
"I'm goin' to be a big sister?"
Jane nods. "You get to be a big sister, I'm going to have two cute kids, and so will Liam."
Claire turns to Liam. "You have a baby too?"
Liam chuckles. "I've got a little boy that's just a little bit older than you. Maybe someday you can come visit and meet him."
Claire bounces up and down. "Can we Mama, can we?"
Jane is silent. How would they afford it? Maybe her grandpa could help. "I will see my sweet thing," she says, ruffling Claire's red curls, so much like her own. "Would you like to see the baby today?"
Claire looks confused. "The baby is coming today?"
Liam laughs. "Not today. He or she has to grow big and strong first."
"Then how we see the baby?"
Jane smiles. How to explain this to a 3-year old? "The Doctor uses a magic wand on Mommy's belly, and then a picture shows up on a screen."
Claire beams. "Can we go now Mama, can we?"
Jane laughs. "We have to get ready first."
All of a sudden she feels an unpleasant feeling washing over her. Nausea. Just great. She scrambles out of bed, and then makes a mad dash for the bathroom. Claire just looks on, confused. She has no idea why her Mama ran out of the bedroom that quickly. "Liam, is Mama okay?"
Liam pauses for a short second. "She'll be fine princess," he assures her. "The baby is making her sick."
"That's not very nice," Claire says matter of factly.
"No," Liam agrees. "It's not."
